Exeter & East Devon Interactive 3D Masterplan - Case Study
We delivered an interactive 3D masterplan for the Exeter & East Devon Growth Point, which has proven to be a valuable visual aid for stakeholders across the region.
The 3D masterplan showing Cranbrook new town was used to educate local councillors about the detail of the scheme at the final planning committee meeting in early 2011. Members were really interested to see the reality of the proposals, and visualise how the new homes would sit within the surrounding landscape. iCreate has worked hard with the various architects and planning consultants for the scheme prior to the planning committee, in order to ensure that the 3D interactive model gave enough information - but not too much! - to make it a valuable aid to decision making.
The 3D model was also used as a visual presentation at the press day which accompanied the 'groundbreaking' ceremony, when the first diggers arrived on site at Cranbook. Images and footage of the masterplan made it into the local press and television news bulletins to accompany the story, ensuring lots of great media coverage for this long awaited day.
In addition to providing the large format full screen presentation for use on large interactive touchscreen displays, iCreate also provided Exeter & East Devon Growth Point with an online version of the 3D masterplan. The interactive presentation was launched to the public at the Devon County Show, and proved a great way to engage with members of the local community. It was a varied and occasionally difficult audience – some people were naturally sceptical about the ability of local councils to deliver effective regeneration, but reassured by the existence of a clear, credible and accessible presentation of the specific proposals.
The interactive visuals on the large touchscreen were appealing to people of all ages - although some had more confidence than others when it came to actually touching the screen! At several points during the day, we had a rush of school children jostling for position in front of the plasma display, all eager to have a go at spinning the model and clicking on the different zones of the map.
The older generation were just as interested, but typically asked a member of the Growth Point team to interact with the model on their behalf, to show them the areas that were of particular relevance to them. For example, residents asked to see where the new business park was in relation to where they lived, and how close the new housing development was to their favourite scenic walk. All of this information was readilly available, making it easy for the local authority to field enquiries and provide the details that people wanted.
